Food to Eat During Chinese New Year

There are six Chinese foods that are considered lucky if you eat them.

The first food is fish. If you eat fish, it is said to increase your prosperity because the Chinese way of saying fish sounds like “surplus.” Chinese people like to have a surplus at the end of the year because they think if they save something at the end of the year, then they can make more in the next year.

Tang yuan is mochi balls filled with black sesame. Tang yuan is said to bring families closer together. The pronunciation and round shape of Tang yuan stand for reunion and being together.

Longevity noodles are said to stand for longevity and happiness because of its name.

Niangao is also lucky because the Chinese way of saying Niangao sounds like getting higher year after year by year.

Tangerine, Oranges and Pomoloes are good luck. The Chinese for orange and tangerine is chéng, which sounds the same as the Chinese for ‘success’. One of the ways of writing tangerine jú contains the Chinese character for luck.
